Description

Diary of Dr Patrick Murray:

1 March 1863-September 1882
Personal diary of Dr Murray with references to his sister Teresa who lived in Clones in County Monaghan. For example:

May 5 'Left Clones for Maynooth very sorry at parting with my beloved sister Teresa, with whom I spent nearly 3 months so very happily'.

September 16 Account of his travels around the country, often in the company of his sister.
Accounts of his illness. 'Wednesday called at St Bridgets, 42 Eccles Street, Dublin, by previous arrangement with me, Miss Ayleward had a girl there, Mary Nulty aged 12, who had been 4 years in the Bird's Nest. I interrogated the girl, the children got beef for dinner on every Friday, did not get meat commonly on any other days. Were told that the Blessed Virgin is not Mother of God, etc. A sham controversy carried on every Monday before the children between a Protestant and a pretended Catholic. Boys and Girls mix together promisciously in the play-ground. Miss Alyeward told me on this occasion, that of the mothers who sold their children to soupers, many were given to drink and got the money for the sole purpose of procuring whiskey'.
