Description

This collection of c.40,000 and 300 volumes mainly relates to Gosford estate administration. A detailed calendar of these papers is available. The collection includes, for example:
A damp-press letter book of Miss Ethel Edwards, 1934-1960.

2 octavo volumes containing an index to all tenants on the Gosford estates in Cavan and Armagh, 1849.

Folio volume which lists tenants names and notes their religious denominations, 1852.

Rental of Richill estate owned by Misses Isabella, Elizabeth and Louisa Acheson, 1822-1830.

Gosford family correspondence, 1745-1867. This correspondence contains letters from numerous female correspondents such as Madame de Salis in London, 1768; Lady Orrery in Calendon, 1752; Mary, Lady Gosford in Bath, 1807; the Marchioness of Sligo, Westport House, 1802; the Duchess of Bedford in Woburn Abbey, 1773 and Lady Maxwell writing to Lord Gosford, stating she heard 'from good foundation that Mr Southwell has declined his being a candidate for the County of Cavan. In consequence of which she trusts Ld. Gosford will support Ld. M. in preference to any other person', 26 April 1793. Also included is a letter from Mrs Catherine Brownlow, London, to Lord Gosford, offering relief to victims of the 1798 rebellion: 'In confiding it to your Lordship['s] distribution I have perfect reliance on the impartiality that will be observed towards those unfortunate Women and Children. Being naturally partial to Lurgan I request that district be particularly attended to', 27 October 1798.
