D/1727/2/1 A letter from Miss E M Crook, an Irish Presbyterian missionary in Manchuria, to friends in Belfast, which notes 'If I had been other than a missionary I would have been married myself, as I loved a man very dearly and he loved me, but being a missionary I could not marry him and so we parted - my conscience would not let me, as I felt it was my duty to be a missionary', 9 February 1904.
