DescriptionThis collection includes the correspondence and papers of the Tennent family. A detailed calendar of these papers is available. The following is a selection of some of the material which is available:
Correspondence of Eliza [McCracken] Tennent including letters from her husband, Robert and from her brothers, Frank and Henry Joy McCracken and from her sisters, Anne and Mary, as well as numerous female relations and friends, c1819-1850.

A printed prospectus of Miss Lambert's school for young ladies in Belfast, no date, 19th century.

A printed prospectus of the Belfast Female Servants' Friend Society, with a report and minutes of a meeting, 1837-1840.

2 journals of Eliza Tennent, mainly concerning books which she had read, but with some family and social comment in addition to some personal reflections which reveal that she was feeling depressed and unwell, June to December 1840.

Correspondence of John Tennent, which contains several letters from women, 1790-1797.

Correspondence of Doctor Robert Tennent, which contains several letters from women, c1784-1837.

Correspondence of Revd. John Tennent, 1764-1806 which contains letters from numerous women, such as Eliza Macrone, a certificate of the annulment of the marriage of Margaret [?Burns] and James Stewart, 1795 and numerous certificates stating that women had been members of church congregations. For example:
D/1748/A/2/3/24 a short certificate stating that Janet Jamieson 'alias widow McRae' had been a member of an unnamed congregation was 'free of any known scandal', 26 August 1801.
