An emigrant letter from Ida Stavely, Philadelphia, United States, to her sister in law, Sarah, referring to financial problems and asking for help: 'I have no relations of my own to go to in my trouble and help must come from somewhere as it is what Willie and I earn is scarcely enough to keep the wolf from the door, since the giving up of his business he is doing work he is not accustomed to and it is only slow starvation', 9 April 1897.
