Description

This large collection of c.500 volumes and 12,000 documents comprises the estate, business, family and political papers of the Alexander/Caledon family, 1639-1951, although the bulk of the collection dates from 1776-1951. A detailed calendar of this collection is available. The Caledon estate correspondence includes, for example:
4 accounts of wages for servants at Caledon House, 1794-1797.

An account of the succession of real property of the 4th Earl of Caledon upon the death of the Countess, Dowager of Caledon in 1863.

Accounts relating to the maintenance allowance paid to the Countess of Calendon for the infant 5th Earl, 1898-1902.

c.50 letters from Lady Caledon mainly relating to the finance of the Caledon estates, 1933-1935.

The Caledon family papers include, for example:
Personal letters to the 2nd Countess of Caledon, including letters from her grandmother, Lady Balcarres, her mother, Lady Hardwicke, her daughter in law, her sister, Lady Stuart de Rothesay and Maria Edgeworth, Sarah Ponsonby, the Duchess of Gloucester, the Duchess of Kent, Sir Robert Peel and the Honourable George Knox, 1811-1852.

Family correspondence between the 2nd Earl of Calendon and his wife, c.1822-1825.

Letters to Dowager Lady Calendon from Thomas Romney Robinson and others about natural history and astronomy, 1841-1845.

Letters and papers of Dowager Lady Caledon, 1839-c.1851.

Correspondence between the 4th Lady Caledon and her bankers, lawyers and estate agents, 1854-1951.

2 manuscript volumes of inventories of the contents of the Dowager Countess of Calendon's London house, 1928.

6 letters from John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury to Lady Russell, mainly relating to ecclesiastical affairs in England, 1689-1693.

Letters and papers of Lady Blount of Herfordshire, 1723-1761.

A letter from [?Oliver] Cromwell to his wife, 1651.
