These diaries are more a record of events than personal reflections. Includes details of visitors to Clonmeen and details of servants, references to the children, especially as babies, her health and daily activities including household tasks, for example in the volume, 31 July 1888-29 November 1889, the entry for 13 November 1888, notes that she is, she declares, `busy in house all day changing furniture and putting away new lot of letter paper from the stores'.
Details of domestic problems are recorded, the volume for 1893 records for 31 August, `Found Julia had not been doing the schoolroom as usual while I was away. Reprimanded her severely she wanted to leave at once - but I told her she must wait her month'.
The volume for 1895 records on 27 December the birth of her son, Stephen, while the volume for 1896 records details of his first months, for example on 11 January, `My milk is beginning to go. I am very much afraid I shall not have enough for baby'.
