Letters from Samuel McClean to his sister Matilda, c.1825; 1827; 1830; 1832. In one letter he expresses concern for his sisters education and recommends courses of study and reading, stating 'constant occupation of the mind is the only way of securing happiness', c.1830. In another letter he gently criticises Matilda for not composing her journal according to the proper conventions and urging her to read about France before travelling to Paris 'as till then you are only fitted for being an idle, unimproved traveller instead of an intelligent observer', c.1825.
