Description

This collection consists of photocopies of the Abercorn papers previously held at the family's home of Baronscourt, County Tyrone, but now deposited in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, reference D/623. An 11 volume calendar containing typed extracts from this collection is available. This collection of c.30,000 documents includes, for example:
T/2541/1F/3B Copy of an account book recording expenses in connection with household and servants, etc., 1792-1801.

T/2541/IG/1-6 Copies of 6 volumes of rent account books for lands in Counties Tyrone and Donegal, some giving the names of tenants, 1877-1903 and relating to both England and Ireland, 1788.

T/2541/FA/1/1/1-20 Copies of letters to and from Lord Abercorn about Anne Plumer's settlement on her marriage to Lord Paisley, afterwards 7th Earl of Abercorn, 1711.

T/2541/FA/2/1/1-32 Copies of letters to the 8th Earl of Abercorn, including letters to Anne and Phillipa Hamilton, 1745-1783.

T/2541/FA/2/2/1-5 Copies of letters from the 8th Earl of Abercorn to Mrs Hamilton about family and financial matters, 1756-1758.

T/2541/FA/3/3 Copies of correspondence between the 8th Earl of Abercorn and the trustees of the Duchess of Chandos, 1794.

T/2541/FA/4/3 Copies of letters to Lord Abercorn from members of the Royal family including Queen Victoria, no date.

T/2541/FB/4/2 Copy of a letter of Mrs Harriet Eliot, the future mother of the 1st Marquis of Abercorn, no date, pre-1749.

T/2541/FB/5/1 Copies of letters to Lady Louisa Jane Russell, later wife of the 2nd Marquess and the 1st Duke of Abercorn, from her father, the 6th Duke of Bedford, c.1818.

T/2541/VR/1-416 Copies of letters and viceregal papers of the 2nd Marquis of Abercorn, 1849-1908, but the bulk of material dates from 1866-1868 and 1874-1876. The papers include, for example:
T/2541/VR/2 Copies of kitchen accounts, including servants' wages for the Viceregal household in Dublin and Lord Abercorn's households at Baronscourt and Chesterfield House, London, 1866-1875.

T/2541/VR/8 Copies of 2 letters from the Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, 1865 and 1871.

T/2541/VR/325; T/2541/VR/403 Copies of 75 letters from the 1st Duchess of Abercorn, 1867-1890.

T/2541/VR/241; T/2541/VR/243 Copies of 2 letters from Lady Aberdeen, 1868.

T/2541/VR/402/11 Copy of a letter from Mrs A M Beatty asking for a situation in his household, 1885; copy of a letter from Madame Berthy in French asking Lord Abercorn for a loan of £70 to pay a bill on the sale of her house, 1875; copies of 3 letters from Lady E.L. Desart, 1866 and 1867.
