Description

Annual Reports and Administrative Council Reports, 1930-1997, the booklets are for the most part issued once a year, with a few examples of two years in one volume. Women appear very occasionally on the administrative council, for example:
The Report of the Administrative Council, 1966-1967, shows Mrs Eileen Desmond as a council member

In the Report for the year 1943, Miss E M Crowley was the official Labour candidate for the Cork borough.

The Report of the Administrative Council for the year 1944, Appendix III, gives the Interim Report of the Sub-Committee on Social Services, signed by the Chairman, Louie Bennett.

The Report of the Administrative Council for the year 1957-1958, pages 14-15, discusses the question of women police while on pages 15-16 of the same report, attitudes are documented on the question of equal pay; Deputy Denis Larkin on 15 July 1958, asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the Government intended to ratify the International Labour Organisation Convention's recommendation on equal pay. To which the minister replied: `The general policy, in relation to the determination of wage rates is that they should, as far as possible, be negotiated freely between employers' and workers' organisations. If workers' trade unions desire to ensure equal remuneration for men and women workers for work of equal value, it is always open to them to seek the application of the principles of the Convention in negotiating wage agreements with employers. The Convention expressly provides that its principles may be applied by means of collective agreements between employers and workers. It is not my intention to introduce legislation in this matter, as this would be contrary to the principle of free negotiation.' [On the 31 October 1952 Deputy Norton, on behalf of the Labour Party had moved a motion for equal pay which was defeated 23 votes to 56.]

In the Ninth Annual Report, being the report of the Administrative Council and the Report of Proceedings of the Annual Conference, 15-17 April 1940, Miss M McDowell of the Women Workers' Union supports a motion on solving unemployment by providing credit to provide jobs, for example through the development of the peat industry, by raising school leaving age and giving pensions at a lower age.

In the Tenth Annual Report, Report of Administrative Councils for the year 1940 and Report of the Proceedings of the 10th Annual Conference, 21-23 April 1941, the Irish Women Worker's Union submitted the following resolution in the form of an addendum: `This Conference urges a widespread campaign to compel the Government to control the distribution and prices of essential commodities so that the poorer people may be assured of an equitable share of available supplies.'

In the Seventh Annual Report, Report of the Administrative Council for the year 1937 and Report of the Annual Conference, 4-6 April, 1937, page 32 gives a table of number of unemployment Books, exchanged, new books issued and the number of books still current in each of the insurance years 1929/1930-1936/1937 inclusive. These are divided as follows: men, boys, women, girls. Page 33 gives a table of estimated average number of contributions paid by men, women, boys, girls, 1930/1931-1936/1937inclusive.
