Description

Typescript and printed material relating to a proposal for a new maternity hospital in Cork and appointments therein.

For example, a pamphlet entitled 'Cork Corporation and the Proposal for a new Maternity Hospital in the City, 15 February 1939. This indicates the approval of the corporation to replace the Erinville Hospital with a Women's Hospital.

Includes material on the attitudes of University College Cork to the Maternity Hospital, for example, a typescript statement, 'Erinville Hospital, Cork. Memorial of Application for an Establishment Order. Some Comments by President Alfred O'Rahilly.[1945]'. This comprises of his objections and suggestions. His interest in the matter is based on his position 'not only as an ordinary citizen but as President of a College which includes a medical school'. The file includes correspondence between O'Rahilly and the Minister for Health, Noel Browne, on these issues.

A typescript statement with manuscript additions states that 'The college is opposed to the proposal of the Minister for Health that there should be a joint appointment of the one person to hold two such major posts as whole time resident Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in charge of Cork Maternity Hospital and as University Professor of Midwifery and Gynaecology. Imagine the impasse that would be created if the person appointed were satisfactory to one authority and unsatisfactory to the other', no date.

The Memorial of Application for an establishment order was made by the 'Lady Governesses of The County and City of Cork `Erinville Lying-in-Hospital. A typescript copy exists and details the names of the Lady Governesses.
