Description | The Aloys Flesichmann Collection, c1890s-1992, includes material on organisation with which Flesichmann was involved, many of which would have had women participants, for example, the Choral Festival, the Cork Orchestral Society (and Cork Symphony Orchestra), Cork Ballet Company, Irish Theatre Ballet and Irish National Ballet, includes particular detail regarding Joan Denise Moriarty and also some detail with regard to the dancers. The collection holds large amounts of material relating to the above and includes manuscript and printed letters, photographs, programmes, leaflets, etc. Other organisations include the Music Teachers Association, for which the collection holds manuscript and printed material, Music Association of Ireland, again manuscript and printed material, Cumann Naisiunta na gCor, manuscript and printed material, Aosdana, printed material, Cultural Relations Committee, printed material. Flesichmann's position as Professor of Music in University College, Cork, has led to material in the collection relating to women. This includes substantial material relating to students, a small amount of material relating to Annie Patterson, Professor of Irish Music, University College, Cork, c1920s and material relating to research assistance, for example on his project relating to a Thematic index to Irish music. The collection contains a large volume of correspondence between Flesichmann and other Irish and international composers and musicians. It includes letters from: Ina Boyle, Irish composer Elizabeth Maconchy, [Irish] composer Harriet Cohen, pianist and great friend of Arnold Bax. Due to her funding of county music schemes in Ireland, the collection contains large amounts of correspondence with Lady Dorothy Mayer. The collection also includes a huge variety of miscellaneous letters from women, including: Jeanne Sheehy, artist and daughter of Edward Sheehy, writer Dorothy Bell, Fota House, Cork Fanny Feehan, writer Eilis Dillon, as O Cuilleanain, writer Sylvia Duff Knight, daughter of Arthur Duff, composer. The Flesichmann Collection holds material relating to Tilly Flesichmann (Swertz), Aloys Flesichmann's mother, mostly dating from c1910-1940. There are interesting personal letters between Tilly and a number of her contemporaries, mainly discussing Cork's cultural life, correspondents include Patrick Hennessy, artist, Father Patrick McSwiney, well known Cork personage, Arnold Bax, composer, E J Moeran, composer, Germaine Stockley, amateur watercolourist and wife of Professor William Stockley, History and English Literature, University College, Cork. Correspondence between Tilly Flesichmann Swertz and her son and husband, also Aloys, letters cover such topics as Flesichmann Senior's time as an internee during World War I and Flesichmann Junior's time spent studying in Germany, early 1920s. The collection holds copies of Tilly Flesichmann's book on Liszt and correspondence regarding the publication of the book. Letters from Tilly Flesichmann's piano students, most of whom were women. The collection holds a very small amount of material relating to Tilly Flesichmann's sister, Maria Walbruga Swertz, who was [professor] of German, University College, Cork, possibly 1909. |
