| Collection Description | Pauline Henley was one of the first female teachers in the NUI. She joined the History Department at UCC in 1931, as an assistant lecturer, making her one of only four women teaching the subject at third level in Ireland. Her seminal work, "Spenser in Ireland", was published in 1928, and challenged existing scholarship on poet Edmund Spenser's time in Ireland. She was acquainted with a number of important nationalist figures, including Terence MacSwiney and his sister Márie (Mary) MacSwiney. |
