Collection DescriptionThe collection, of some 300, 000 images, is made up of glass plates, plastic negatives and a small number of prints. It provides a record of many aspects of 20th century Irish life, and it is particularly strong in the coverage of politics and sport in Ireland. The material relating to the period pre- 1930 has been catalogued and is available on the online catalogue. Images that featured in the exhibition A Century of News Photography are also available through the Online Catalogue. Work is on going but some sections of the collection will not be available for consultation for several years [NLI].

Description

Material is ordered according to numbers originally given by Independent Newspapers which include 156 boxes of the H series, 148 boxes of the R series, 16 boxes of Belfast series, 8 boxes of Aerial (bought from Morgan), 39 boxes of personalities, 28 boxes of miscellaneous and 50 boxes of themes. Dominant themes include sport, especially GAA, politics, such as personalities, barracks and prisons, political prisoners, the Congo and John F. Kennedy's visit and social and economic photos including of buildings, theatres, hospitals, industrial schools, streets, views, Ford's factory and Dublin's cinemas 1934. The vast majority of the collection is catalogued by month and year or theme. Many of the images include captions.
